In May 2025, PRISM carried out a strategic mission in Algeria, visiting the coastal areas of Algiers, Tizi Ouzou, Béjaïa, and Jijel. The goal? To support the development of fishing tourism as a complementary activity to traditional fishing, offering new income opportunities for fishers and contributing to the protection of marine and coastal heritage through collaboration with the Blue Economy program.
During meetings with researchers, public officials, and local stakeholders, key operational needs emerged: from simplifying the authorization process for fishing tourism, to creating boat tour itineraries, and integrating culture, environment, and sustainable tourism.
To this end, PRISM will provide support to define local strategies and practical tools: an Operational Manual containing pilot itineraries and economic models to assess the impact of fishing tourism in Algeria.
Several fishers have already begun transitioning to regulated tourism activities, in synergy with environmental protection and the involvement of local communities. They will soon visit Sicily and Sardinia to continue the discussions that began in Algeria.
A concrete effort to enhance the blue economy and make the sea a shared, respected resource—told through the life stories of fishers.
