During the final conference of 2GEM project, which was held in Helsinki, hosted by the coordinator AAR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION RY (ASDA RY), in the amazing venue of the Iiris Centre, we had the chance to talk with policymakers, decision-makers, activists and volunteers as well as educators with a migrant background, who work with migrant people and Third Country Nationals (TCNs), about the concept of “inclusion” and “second generation of migrants”.
It was an opportunity to deconstruct reality as we know it, to let people involved in migratory routes explain the phenomenon from their point of view.
What would be the point of creating a project on migrant generations without talking to them?
As a crowning achievement of the project activities and achievements, PRISM Impresa Sociale s.r.l., on the occasion of the project’s multiplier event, organised in Palermo a round table on the 21st of January, 2023, at the Oratorio Santa Chiara, located in the historical Ballarò district (Palermo), which offers reception and support services for migrants, particularly women and children, and a second, more informal event on the 31st of January, 2023, at the Centro Internazionale delle Culture Ubuntu, located in the heart of Palermo’s historic centre, which hosts after-school activities attended by young people of all ages from 1.5 and second generation.
The events were conceived as moments for sharing: sharing the project’s contents, activities and outputs, sharing new inputs for future projects involving migrant people and local associations working on the migratory field, as well as sharing opinions and ideas about inclusion, diversity, integration, sense of belonging and identity. Speakers involved demonstrate strong enthusiasm, as well as keenness to speak about the role of intercultural workers with migrant background in our society, which still does not have the consideration and importance it deserves.
These events marked the end of the project’s 27-month lifecycle, but also the beginning of a dialogue with the area that will be transformed into new insights for working with and for local organisations and people residing in Palermo.
