Prison is by right and definition a place of reparation for crimes committed, but also and above all a space for re-education, rehabilitation and humanization. In fact, prisoners and ex-prisoners constitute a population at risk of marginalization and with specific personal, psychological and social needs: in most cases they lack the socio-cultural background essential to reintegration into society. That is, they lack those “transversal” skills that allow a correct interpretation and integration of reality (e.g., knowing how to communicate, how to manage themselves and how to manage contact with others).
The Erasmus+ project RECHANCE (Rehabilitation approaches for providing former prisoners with personal development and society entry CHANCEs) wanted, in its two years of activity, to make up for these shortcomings by creating a free digital platform that would provide these kinds of skills both directly to the target audience of prisoners/former prisoners and indirectly to those prison workers/educators who work daily in facilitating their rehabilitation.
As a crowning achievement of the project activities, on December 5, 2022, PRISM Impresa Sociale s.r.l. presented its Local Multiplier Event (“RECHANCE EVENT: Digital Tools and Rehabilitation of Prisoners and Ex-offenders“) at Villa Riso in Palermo. In celebration of the end of the activities, the project results (the country report, the platform and its user manual) were presented, discussing together the successful experience of the Training Event held Casa di Reclusione “Calogero di Bona” (Ucciardone Prison) in Palermo.
The RECHANCE Event was conceived, by PRISM Impresa Sociale s.r.l., as a moment of celebration and exchange of “good practices,” in order to foster effective networking among the different organizational souls operating in the Sicilian territory in the rehabilitation theme. In fact, there were three keynote speakers: the Centro Studi Cesam; the Opera Don Calabria and the Associazione Euro, three dynamic realities that in Sicily operate as a stimulus and innovation of rehabilitation approaches related to prisoners and ex-prisoners.
The speakers and participants both interacted with enthusiasm and interest about the professional usefulness of the materials and the RECHANCE platform (and its 8 modules: stress management, time management, conflict resolution, teamwork, ICT skills, health promotion, communication, self-esteem), arguing them to be a professionally expendable stimulus to enhance the soft skills which useful in everyday life.
