On 17 June, at the Sicily Region Office in Brussels, representatives of European institutions, researchers, businesses and international organisations will gather for the event:
“Sicily – Europe – Mediterranean: Agri-food Innovation and the Role of European Programmes in Territorial Development.”
Over the past few years, Sicily has emerged as a particularly interesting testing ground because it has managed to achieve something that often remains only an ambition in Europe: connecting different EU-funded initiatives and transforming them into a genuine innovation ecosystem.
Rather than isolated projects operating independently, a broader strategy has taken shape—one that links research, businesses, local communities and international cooperation.
The event will showcase concrete experiences and success stories in areas such as:
• Precision agriculture and digital technologies for climate adaptation;
• Robotics applied to agricultural systems;
• Cooperation between Sicily and Tunisia to strengthen agri-food value chains;
• Social inclusion through agricultural employment;
• The valorisation of Mediterranean biodiversity and high-value nutraceutical plant species.
The event will also provide an opportunity to present the MedAge Alliance, a Euro-Mediterranean scientific platform designed to connect research, innovation, active longevity, the Mediterranean Diet and sustainable territorial development.
The participation of representatives from the European Commission, FAO, academia and the international cooperation sector highlights an important reality: the Mediterranean is not only a region facing shared challenges.
It can also become a space where shared solutions are developed and tested.
Perhaps the most significant aspect is not that these projects exist.
What matters is that they are beginning to interact with one another.
And it is precisely from these connections that the development models of tomorrow’s Mediterranean may emerge.
