“European Ambassadors” in Marineo: examples of youth active citizenship and local sustainability

Thanks to the support and collaboration of the Municipality of Marineo, on November 11th, 2022 PRISM Impresa sociale s.r.l. had the honour of presenting the Multiplier Event of the Erasmus+ project EUROTHON (European Hackathon: shaping youth ideas) at the historical location of the Beccadelli Castle in Marineo.

A moment of exchange and debate on the importance of local youth initiatives as a mean of active citizenship, the conference presented the EUROTHON project both as a knowledge tool on the European Union and a vehicle of the many international mobility opportunities available today for young people, Erasmus+ first of all.

A virtuous example of such is Marineo’s Consulta Giovanile (Youth Council), taking part to the conference. The Consulta Giovanile is a youth organisation operating within the municipality, it si a motor of change born from the young inhabitants themselves and the vehicle for Marineo’s sustainable development – as sustained by Mayor Ribaudo and Deputy Mayor Greco during the meeting. In fact, the Consulta has the twofold task of proposing initiatives to enhance local resources and promote the full and responsible inclusion of young people in the social fabric.

The ambition of EUROTHON is to revitalise European youth activism as the cornerstone of local sustainability and inclusive EU renewal. In a world where the creative potential of young people is underestimated, the EUROTHON Platform Modules and the European Ambassadors Toolkit – produced to help young people take up activism on their own – truly reflect a new vision of sustainable and digital European active citizenship.

The protagonists of this change geared towards strengthening European values of equality, democracy and sustainability are the three EUROTHON ‘European Ambassadors’, the young participants of the European Hackathon Event in Nicosia: Emilia Salerno, Francesco Vitrano and Biagio Falcone. Two of them spoke at the conference, recounting their training about EU citizens’ rights, environmental protection and social entrepreneurship. Emilia and Francesco recounted especially how they personally got involved, developing critical European thinking enriched by the exchange of ideas and multicultural points of view.

The EUROTHON platform includes 5 free online modules (How to Become a Change-maker; United in Diversity; Save the Planet; Social Entrepreneurship is the way; Be an European Ambassador), and brings together maps, socio-cultural analyses and videos on on the European Union and its different opportunities for young people passionate about environmental sustainability and social inclusion issues. On the other hand, the Toolkit for Ambassadors and Influencers (which is currently being finalised) lists a number of practical indications on how to pursue active citizenship, providing concrete tools on issues such as event management, social media, and finding European opportunities.
