“Talking Hands” aims to develop an open, flexible online platform for everybody who would like to learn basic elements of sign language in a non-sequential manner – which means that learners will be able to select topics of interest at will, such as holidays, days of the week, medical terms, etc. Although there are specialised schools that offer sign language lessons to relevant stakeholders, there is a lack of learning materials freely available online, as most of them are in books and this is not easy because one needs to see the signs a teacher is making through motion to comprehend them.
Hence, the provision of lessons of sign languages needs to be improved, especially for adults who are relatives or friends of a deaf person and cannot afford to take full time formal education sign language lessons, or for deaf persons who seek non-formal education resources. In this regard, it is important to note that our platform will not be addressed to interpreters or other experts who have formal learning opportunities available.
- To develop a methodology, to collect and record sign language lessons from the participating countries’ languages, plus the English sign language.
- To provide sign language lessons through digital learning opportunities at a non-formal education context in a non-sequential manner
- To offer the opportunity to freely learn basic elements of the sign language for their benefit, but also for the benefit of deaf persons with whom they are in contact, so that they have the ability to overcome the barrier of communicating independently and feel included in their respective environments.
- Delivering ‘Inception Workshops’ with local stakeholders to specify the thematic topics that interest them the more and to establish a consensus. Also, local particularities, patterns and differences will be noted.
- Producing Sign language video lessons identified for recording, plus corresponding information, grammar, vocabulary, etc., in total 60 minutes of learning material for each lesson.
- Methodology Guide with the description of the lessons and their contents, and their division in 7 thematic core topics.
- Sign language video lessons and supplementary learning materials
- Open Online Platform that includes introductive information about the sign language’s background, specific information about each country’s sign language, as well as specific learning materials, such as grammar, vocabulary and related exercises, that will accompany every lesson.
Results
- Improved availability of high quality, flexible learning opportunities for adults.
- Raised awareness of individuals, authorities, education organisations, the e-learning industry, the Deaf Community, the practitioners and experts worldwide.
- Established a new paradigm of alternative and innovative form of learning sign language that could be used in any group of people who would like to communicate with their deaf family members, friends in an easier way.
